Plan Your Best Trip Ever!

When you're planning a cruise, one of the first decisions you may face is whether to book directly with the cruise line or work with a travel advisor.
The short answer? Either can work. If you already know exactly which cruise, ship and cabin you want and you're comfortable managing everything yourself, booking direct may be perfectly reasonable.
But if you're comparing cruise lines, trying to find the right ship for your travel style, coordinating flights and hotels, or simply want someone in your corner before, during and after your trip, a good travel advisor can add considerable value.
And when you're spending thousands of dollars on a vacation, choosing the right cruise can be more important than simply finding a cruise.
There are good reasons some travellers prefer to book directly with a cruise line.
If you've cruised with the same company before and already know the ship and itinerary you want, booking direct can be straightforward. The cruise line's travel planners can provide detailed information about their own ships, itineraries, cabins, dining and onboard experience.
For a confident, experienced cruiser with a simple booking, that may be all the help you need.
There is one important limitation, however: a cruise line can only recommend the cruises it sells.
If you're speaking with a cruise line representative, their job is understandably to help you book that particular cruise line. They aren't going to tell you that another cruise line might be a better fit for your travel style, budget or expectations.
That's where an independent travel advisor can make a difference.
A good travel advisor isn't simply a person who can make a reservation for you.
The real value is in helping you make the right travel decisions before you book.
There are now so many cruise lines, ships and styles of cruising that choosing a cruise can be surprisingly complicated. A large family resort-style ship, a premium small-ship experience, a luxury ocean cruise and an expedition vessel can all visit the same destination — but the experience onboard can be completely different.
That's why I often start with the traveller rather than the cruise.
What kind of experience are you looking for? How important is dining? Do you want lots of entertainment and activities, or a quieter and more intimate environment? Is the size of the ship important? Are you travelling solo? Is this a special occasion? How much time do you want to spend in port?
The right cruise isn't necessarily the one with the lowest price. It's the one that best matches what you want from your vacation.
One of the biggest advantages of working with a travel advisor is having someone who can look beyond a single cruise line.
I work with a range of cruise products, from ocean and river cruising to premium, luxury and small-ship experiences. That allows me to compare the overall experience rather than simply presenting you with one company's options.
Sometimes the cruise you initially had in mind really is the best choice.
And sometimes, after talking through what you actually want, another ship or cruise line makes much more sense.
My job isn't to sell you a particular cruise line. My job is to help you find the cruise that's right for YOU.
Your cruise is only one part of the journey.
Depending on your itinerary, you may also need:
When everything is booked separately, it can become your responsibility to make sure all the pieces work together.
That's where having one person who understands the entire trip can be particularly valuable.
This is one of the most common questions I hear:
“Will I pay more if I use a travel advisor?”
In many cases, there is no additional cost to the traveller for using a travel advisor. Travel advisors are generally compensated by the travel supplier when a booking is made.
Depending on the cruise and current promotions, an advisor may also be able to offer added value such as onboard credit, amenities or other promotional benefits.
But I wouldn't recommend choosing an advisor simply because they promise the biggest perk.
A $100 onboard credit isn't much consolation if you've booked the wrong ship or cabin.
The value is in getting the right trip — and having an experienced person helping you navigate it.
I don't believe everyone needs a travel advisor.
Booking directly with the cruise line may make perfect sense if:
There's nothing wrong with being a confident do-it-yourself traveller.
On the other hand, I'd strongly consider working with a travel advisor if:
That last point can be particularly important.
Hopefully, everything goes exactly as planned. But if a flight is delayed, a connection changes, a cruise is disrupted or something unexpected happens, it can be reassuring to have someone who already knows your trip and can help you determine what to do next.
For some travellers, booking direct is the right choice.
For others, a travel advisor can make the entire process easier — and potentially help them make a better choice in the first place.
For me, the biggest difference is this:
A cruise line can tell you about its cruises. A good travel advisor can help you determine which cruise lines and cruises are right for you.
That's the role I want to play for my clients.
As TravelOnly with Danny, I specialize in helping travellers navigate the many choices available in cruising, from ocean and river cruises to premium and luxury experiences. I take the time to understand what matters to you before recommending a cruise, rather than starting with a particular ship or promotion.
And I don't believe you should book with me simply because I'm a travel advisor.
Let's have a conversation first.
Tell me where you're thinking of going, what kind of experience you're looking for and what's important to you. If I can add value, I'll tell you how. And if booking directly with the cruise line makes more sense for your particular situation, I'll tell you that too.
After all, the goal isn't simply to book a cruise.
It's to book the right cruise for you.
If you're considering a cruise and aren't sure where to begin, I'd be happy to help you compare your options.
